Step 5

Cease, prevent or mitigate adverse impacts

  • Based on their risk assessment, assign improvement activities to your suppliers for mitigating environmental risks at their facilities.
  • Request onsite BEPI audit by an amfori BEPI-qualified and specially trained auditor.
  • If your supplier has already been asked to complete an audit by another member, you may use the same audit for your own purposes.

amfori BEPI is not an environmental certification. It uses an audit rating scale from A (very good) to E (unacceptable). Because this rating system reflects varying levels of performance rather than a single standard, it cannot be considered a certification.

As a business-based association, amfori is committed to supporting the sustainability efforts of the businesses it represents through a risk‑based approach and continuous improvement. Instead of issuing a simple pass‑or‑fail outcome to suppliers, we work collaboratively with our businesses to encourage progress and responsible business practices.

amfori BEPI covers eight different Environmental Performance Areas: Environmental Management System, Energy & Climate, Emissions to Air, Water & Effluents, Waste, Biodiversity, Chemicals and Nuisances.

Furthermore, amfori BEPI enables the measurement of critical metrics such as carbon dioxide emissions, energy consumption, waste generation, and wastewater management.

amfori BEPI activities are divided into:

  • Risk assessment: A self-declaredsite-based questionnaire completed by supplier for an overview of potential environmental hotspot at facilities.
  • Environmental monitoring: A on-site full or focused scope audit applicable to all sectors.
  • Full scope environmental monitoring: Covers all eight Environmental Performance Areas and verifies key metrics.
  • Focused environmental monitoring: Focuses on risk prioritised in the risk assessment and/or according to the business’s needs.
  • Collaboration with ZDHC: Businesses seeking to strengthen chemical management in their textile supply chains can benefit from the collaboration and data‑sharing agreement between amfori BEPI and ZDHC.
  • Continuous improvement: A collaborative process through which businesses and suppliers work together to strengthen sustainability performance.  It centres on identifying root causes of audit findings and defining corrective and preventive actions that lead to meaningful, measurable progress over time.
  • Follow-up audits: A confirmation that a corrective action plan has been fully carried out. They verify whether all findings have been properly addressed and whether measurable improvements have been achieved in previously identified risk areas.
  • Capacity Building: A wide selection of online courses, live workshops, videos and training materials for businesses and their suppliers through the amfori Academy.
  • amfori Insights: A monitoring and reporting solution that tracks progress through aggregated business data and insights.

The rating of an amfori BEPI Environmental Monitoring reflects the extent to which a supplier complies with both legal and non‑legal requirements across all assessed Environmental Performance Areas. During the audit, the auditor gathers evidence through document reviews, site tours and interviews to evaluate performance. For full‑scope Environmental Monitoring, the amfori Sustainability Platform provides an overall score as well as individual scores for each of the eight EPAs (A–E). For focused‑scope Environmental Monitoring, only the relevant EPAs receive scores, and no overall score is generated.

The amfori BEPI audit cycle spans two years, designed to reduce audit fatigue. If a supplier receives an A or B rating, the audit report remains valid for the entire two-year cycle. However, if the rating is C, D, or E, the report is valid for only one year, requiring a follow-up audit for the supplier to complete the full audit cycle.
