What does “sustainable wine” mean?
At the end of 2023, the Sustainable Wine Roundtable (SWR) an independent and global multi-stakeholder coalition, has released its Global Reference Framework (GRF) report, setting out current best practices on sustainability in wine. It provides an overview of the most relevant standards in the wine industry, including amfori BSCI.
amfori co-founder of the SWR
Launched in July 2021, the Sustainable Wine Roundtable (SWR) was founded by 50 members, including amfori, committed to transforming the wine industry towards sustainability. With regular meetings, this independent multi-stakeholder coalition aim at enabling practical solutions and inspire sustainability action through the promotion of sustainable development in the global wine industry. It also provides a platform for dialogue, advocacy, collaboration, and active knowledge sharing.
The GRF report defines what does “sustainable wine” mean
With its GRF report, the SWR aims to help navigate into the complex landscape of existing tools, schemes and frameworks that contribute to addressing sustainability challenges in the wine sector. The report is the first definitive statement of what “sustainable wine” means. Four phases are envisaged for this long-term work :
- Phase 1) Developing a scoring matrix
- Phase 2) Benchmarking an initial 20 standards
- Phase 3) Benchmarking of remaining standards
- Phase 4) Reviewing the GRF
In 2024, the GRF will be used to benchmark wine sustainability standards, including the amfori BSCI. It provides the means to compare existing standards against each other and against global best practice in wine sustainability. It is also a practical solution for responding to increasing regulatory requirements for supply chain due diligence and the need to report on carbon emissions.
