Learn how to actively prevent child labour in your company

At the end of 2023, two major reports were released on the state of child labour in the world. Both of them, underline the ultimate need for companies to engage in a comprehensive approach to actively implement and follow up on child labour policies. At amfori, our members can learn via a new training course how to implement an effective child labour prevention policy and what amfori’s expectations are on child labour remediation.

In 2023, two major reports raised the alarming state of Child Labour in the world

At the end of October, “The State of Children’s Rights and Business 2023” was published by The Global Child Forum and Boston Consulting Group. This benchmark report demonstrates an alarming collective decline in corporate responsibility towards children. 795 companies across 28 industries (with a combined revenue of 32.6 trillion USD) were evaluated. 87% of them have a child labour policy, but only 49% follow up with audits or other forms of supplier assessment, and only 30% report incidents or risks of child labour.

One month later, the International Labour Organisation (ILO) released a paper on child labour and climate change. It highlights that environmental and human rights abuses in business operations and supply chains frequently occur in tandem and are closely linked. Among other recommendations, this paper calls on governments to integrate both environmental and human rights elements into national laws and regulations governing the behaviour of companies, including in their domestic and cross-border supply chains.

amfori training course on Child Labour prevention and remediation

In early 2024, we launched a new training course for our members to better understand, prevent and remediate Child Labour. In this training course, members can understand what the guiding documents are that led amfori to implement a zero tolerance protocol on this crucial topic, but also how they can prevent and remediate child labour.  It ends with a short video from a real-life case study produced by our partner, the Center for Child Rights and Business, highlighting a powerful testimony from Warwar Nwe, a 15-year-old girl in Myanmar.

In the benchmark report, encouraging findings reveal that 75% of the top 100 companies made improvements thanks to a framework in place to balance children’s well-being against short-term profits. On the other hand, the ILO paper demonstrates that environmental and human rights obligations can, and need to, be addressed hand-in-hand. Through regular trainings, events and webinars, amfori facilitates knowledge-sharing and experience among its members. amfori believes that continuous and reinforced collaboration is key to better anticipate ESG-related risks, focus on prevention and mobilise efforts to foster tomorrow’s sustainable world.
