Local network Bangladesh
Connect, learn, and collaborate locally in Bangladesh
Our local presence in Bangladesh offers members and their suppliers practical guidance and regular opportunities to engage through meetings and workshops. These sessions allow members to share experiences and explore ways to strengthen sustainability across their supply chains.
The local network also facilitates engagement with local stakeholders and provides context-specific advice tailored to national challenges and priorities.
Bangladesh has emerged as a key player in global trade, driven by its dynamic ready-made garment (RMG) sector, which accounts for 84% of the country’s total exports. In 2024, the industry reached a historic milestone with $50 billion in apparel exports. Beyond textiles, Bangladesh is diversifying its export base, with growing contributions from pharmaceuticals, leather goods, jute products, handicrafts, tea and light engineering items. The government’s focus on economic expansion, coupled with improving compliance standards, positions Bangladesh as an increasingly competitive and responsible trading partner. The “Smart Bangladesh” vision aims to boost high-tech manufacturing and renewable energy, creating new opportunities for sustainable investment.
Bangladesh has taken significant steps to align with international labour standards (ILO) and enhance human rights and environmental due diligence. The Bangladesh Labour Act (2006, amended in 2018) serves as the cornerstone for worker protections, ensuring fair wages, workplace safety, and collective bargaining rights. Environmental regulations, such as the Environmental Conservation Act (1995), mandate sustainable industrial practices, while anti-trafficking laws strictly prohibit forced and bonded labour. In May 2025, the Labour Reform Commission proposed further updates, including wage revisions, expanded maternity benefits, and stronger safeguards for union rights—reflecting the country’s ongoing commitment to progress.
